Recorded down on today’s date the 6th September 2024 commenced at 9; 20 Hours at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Masiaka Police Station. One Mr. Mohamed Koroma of Malimbor Village, Masiaka enter the Department and reported that he has been receiving threats on his life on persistent basis by his elder brother’s Kinsmen also known as Members of the Male Poro Secret
Society in which they can testify when it comes to investigations.
According to Mr. Mohamed Koroma, he told the Police that these harassments and threats on his life started in early 20s, when he learned through village gossip that his elder brother, who is the local chief of Lower Yoni, was seriously sick. And for that reason, the village heads and members of the Male Secrete Poro Society decided to initiate him into the society in other to pass the throne to him.
Upon his refusal to be initiated into the Male Secrete Poro Society, the threats started to escalate to a point which led him to make an official report to notify the Police.
According to complainants, these Kings men who are members of the Male Poro Secrete Society responsible for initiating young boys into the Male Secrete Poro Society approached him to take over the position of his elder brother as a member of the Poro Secret Society. He also reported that, his elder brother was seriously ill in Malimbor Village, Masiaka in the Port Loko District.
Mohamed Koroma went on to say that when he got the news that he was to be initiated into the Male secrete society, he got feared because not only for the immense responsibilities but also due to the dark traditions tied to the role. He also recalled the stories of the past chiefs which haunted him, when their heads not buried with them, the ritual of drinking human blood from a cow’s horn dur;ng inauguration. All these tales clashed with his dreams of education, his faith in Islam and the life he envisioned.
When Mohamed Koroma refused to be initiated into the secret society, he left the village and travelled to the Neighbouring country in (Guinea) for his safety.
Investigations also revealed that many young men have fallen victims of the dangers associated with the cult except those who run away from their communities for safe heavens, some even run out of the county. He said
Mohamed Koroma ‘s brother was a senior member of the Poro society.
He continued to tell the police that the only option left for him was to avoid his father’s home town, the entire district and the country. He said, his decision not to even visit his father’s home town was a sad one as his safety was also at stake. Since he was now considered a social deviant, because of his Muslim faith, He told the police that, the only option available for him was to make this statement or report to serve as a strategic move to counter false accusations that may arise.
