Accident At Koidu Holdings Kills Machine Operator

Information from Kono revealed that one Alhaji Kono Boy, a machine operator was killed in an accident at the mines during the cause of operations, and this has raised questions over the safety measures at the company for its workers.

Speaking to the media, the Corporate Affairs Officer of Koidu Holdings, Ibrahim Turay, expressed empathy for the death of Kono Boy, who he described as one of the company’s prized assets. He furthered that Kono Boy joined Koidu Holdings as a laborer, and over the years, through his exemplary work, he was able to rise through the ranks to a machine operator. At the position, Kono Boy was seen as a shining example of for others that they too can rise with efforts on their side. 

Ibrahim Turay expressed sadness over the loss. Answering to questions about what the company has done over the said loss, He maintained that it is mandatory on the company to handle the funeral, which they have done, and also, mandatory, in accordance with statutory requirements to engage the family about the relationship between the company and their loved one, adding that whilst the engagement would hinge on compensation of the family, especially the next of kin, he would not be drawn on the matter, stressing that there is written document in respect of compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.

Ibrahim Turay stressed that premium is put on safety in their work place, and that there is regular meeting held on safety issues. He however, lamented over this unfortunate accident that claimed the life of their trusted staff. He furthered that the incident is being investigated by the company and the police to determine what happened, and if there were lapses, how to address them. He added that at the conclusion of the investigations by all parties, the findings will be produced and measures put in place to avert any such occurrence in the future.

Ibrahim Turay then called on residents of Kono to remain calm and wait for the report of the investigation, reiterating again that Koidu Holdings puts premium on safety issues. Residents, he furthered, should exercise patience and believe in the company, as Koidu Holdings cares for the safety of every staff, including residents of Kono. He recalled the fact that during the various natural disasters, including the Ebola and COVID-19, no staff was laid off, and even those told to stay at home to reduce congestion at the work place, were paid regularly their emoluments. He assured residents that Koidu Holdings will stand by the people.
