MTHE Staff to Work under Embattled TEC Chairman

A fresh storm has erupted within Sierra Leone’s tertiary education sector as stunned staff of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) are reportedly being compelled to continue working under Prof. A. M. Alghali, despite serious allegations of misappropriation of NLe2,004,337.84 which is casting a heavy shadow over his leadership.
According to highly placed institutional source, the decision by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) to retain and impose Prof. Alghali in his official capacity has created an atmosphere of fear, resentment, and deep uncertainty among TEC workers. Many staff members say they feel intimidated, betrayed, and unprotected, especially while the allegations remain unresolved.
Insiders reveal rising tension within the Commission, with employees privately expressing shock that disciplinary or administrative action has not been taken pending investigation.
Instead, they allege that the Ministry’s directive appears to shield the embattled official while undermining workers’ morale and the integrity of the sector.
Observers say the situation threatens to erode public trust in higher education governance at a time when transparency, accountability, and institutional ethics have become national priorities.
Civil society actors and education stakeholders are already calling for urgent clarification from the Ministry, arguing that the welfare of staff and the credibility of the Commission must not be sacrificed for political convenience or internal power structures.
As the controversy deepens, TEC employees are reportedly weighing their options, with some considering formal petitions and others warning that the morale within the institution “has reached breaking point.”
The public now awaits an official response—from both the Ministry and Prof. Alghali—as pressure mounts for accountability, transparency, and respect for due process before further damage is done to the already fragile tertiary education landscape.
