At the government weekly press briefing, hosted by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on peace and national cohesion Town Hall Meeting with the theme: ‘’What we can do to cultivate the culture of fostering peace and national cohesion in the country.’’ Their event took place at the New Brookfields Hotel on 27August 2024.
During the panel discussion on how to cultivate the future of peace in Sierra Leone, Honourable Daniel Koroma, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the main opposition in Parliament, the APC, who was one of the panelists said: ‘’ When a government is in power they made laws that suit them and when they leave power those laws never favour them again,’’ adding that it will disturb the democratic process of the country and breach the peace and national cohesion in the country. He also disclosed that the ongoing constitutional review the APC party is not part of the process and it is against inclusivity and breaches the democratic process which will not bring about peace and national cohesion.
The Deputy Leader of also strongly condemned the Jury Bill that is before Parliament, which seeks to remove the Juror system in the 1991 constitution the jury, adding that the Juror trial is very important in the court system as it will help the judges to make sound judgement in sensitive cases. He also cited the recent treason trial in which the Jurors and the judges played a critical role coming up with fair judgement therefore the Jury system must stay.
Moreover, Hon. Daniel Koroma averred that there is also another clause that is affecting the inclusivity in the country’s constitution which is Section 77(1) K must be removed in the constitution, noting that the section is giving absolute right to Parliamentarian belonging to political parties to seek the interest of the party over the people who voted them in power.
