As ECSL Turns Down Tripartite Request…

APC in a State of Coma

By Mohamed Kamara
The Commissioner and Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Mr. Mohamed Konneh has insisted that the Commission would not hand over the 2023 multitier elections results to the Tripartite Committee for scrutiny because the All People’s Congress Party (APC) has refused to follow Administrative Procedures after the June 24 Multitier Elections.
The Commissioner said the Sierra Leone 1991 Constitution Section 47 of Sierra Leone clearly states that in any given national election held in Sierra Leone be it Municipal or otherwise, all contesting candidates who are not satisfied with the result shall within 7 days petition the results in the High Court of Sierra Leone through their Barristers and Solicitors. He said after the said elections, neither the APC Party nor any other political party raised concerns meaning they accepted the results in totality.

He said the only authority that is mandated by law to demand the results in any given elections to prove its authenticity is the judiciary. He noted that the Unity Agreement which forms the Tripartite Committee has no Constitutional instrument that warrants it to demand the elections results. He said the Committee was formed to improve future electoral processes.
The APC on the other hand insisted that it would suspend its membership in the Tripartite Committee because of the refusal of ECSL to hand over the elections results and that this was agreed upon in the Unity Agreement.
The work of the Tripartite Committee came to a halt owing to its stand-off with the ECSL has raised a lot of opinions, commentaries and views from Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad.
