Sierra Leoneans living at Kissy Dock Yard have faced the worse humiliation in their lives and are demanding on the government for quick intervention over their land dispute that has led to what people described as a worse victimization by an Indian national at the Fisheries Kissy Dock Yard in Freetown.
The tensions have sparked fears of more potential violence, and humiliation as residents at Kissy Dock Yard, calling for immediate government action to prevent loss of lives and properties.
According to our investigation carried out by this medium, the Indian national, whose proper identity remains hidden and also the CEO of S.I Construction Company is allegedly attempting to claim ownership of the piece of land that has long been occupied by Sierra Leoneans for decades.
The dispute has escalated in recent weeks, with accusations of humiliation, intimidation, harassment, and unlawful eviction of people from the community at Fisheries.
Chairlady of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) who doubles as Chairlady of Fisheries, Local Councillor and affected people have expressed growing concerns about the lack of response from authorities from both the central government and the Ministry of Lands respectively.
Speaking to this media, Chairlady Rugiatu of the ruling government said that they as community people are calling for the government to immediately intervene before any ugly situation spark out of control.
Some residents fear that, without prompt action by the government authorities, the conflict will deepen and erupt to significant harm, or even loss of lives of innocent individuals. Rugiatu said that they as community people, they have lived for decades on that land without humiliation or eviction. The Chairlady of the SLPP in that constituency noted that, “we are simply asking for justice and protection from the government”.
She noted that the land in question has been their home for previous generations and they want t generations yet unborn to continue living of the disputed land. We will not allow anyone, no matter their nationality, race or colour to take away our land through force or intimidation,’’ a concern resident remarked.
The Fisheries community area is now in a very crucial condition for peaceful residents as it affects fishermen and their livelihoods of their families. As these ugly situations continue to hinder their livelihood, calls for urgent government action is growing louder.
Local activists are calling on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation in order to enforce the rule of law, and mediate for a peaceful settlement before tensions escalate further into violence.
“If we are evicted from our houses and our houses destroyed for a foreign national, it will be a disgrace for both the SLPP party and the Government itself,’’ Councillor Rugiatu stated. Ya. Sallay Sesay revealed that, they are in total fear and intimidation for the pressure mounted on them over their piece of land they have acquired for over 50/60 years back.
She concluded that they are ready to die for their rights in connection about the said land, if the authorities fail to intervene so as to prevent violence within their community at Kissy Dock Yard. “We pleading for government intervention now to avoid bloodshed,’’ a resident threatened.
