…As Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr in the Spotlight
By John K. Marah
Hon. Alfred Thomson, a member of the All People’s Congress (APC), has made a heartfelt plea for justice regarding the ongoing dispute over the Congo Town Field at Ephraim J. Robinson in Freetown.
He has personally invested billions of Leones in its development and emphasized the field’s critical role in community progress, youth engagement, and national development through sports.
Thomson highlighted the transformative power of football as a unifying force that fosters peace, harmony, and mental well-being, particularly among the youths. He believes the Congo Town Field is essential for creating safe recreational spaces that help steer young people away from negative influences while providing opportunities for talent development.
The field’s future is now at risk due to ownership disputes and reported plans for its demolition. Thomson expressed deep concern and urged the government to intervene swiftly and fairly. Despite having engaged in dialogue with the Freetown City Council, he revealed that the Mayor of Freetown plans to demolish the field by Monday, escalating tensions further.
Aligning his efforts with President Julius Maada Bio’s “Big Five Game Changers,” Thomson stressed that his project aligns with national priorities for youth empowerment and sustainable development. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in resolving the dispute amicably, reaffirming his commitment to the Congo Town community and the project’s potential to bring unity and progress to Sierra Leone.
