Chief Minister Assures UN Dep. Sec.Gen to promote Salone’s Global Leadership

Sierra Leone has once again demonstrated its growing influence on the world stage as Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh held a high-level meeting with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, in New York. The engagement followed President Julius Maada Bio’s recent bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, underscoring the government’s continued commitment to proactive diplomacy and international cooperation.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sengeh reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s dedication to the values and principles of the UN Charter, highlighting the country’s leadership in advancing peace, security, and inclusive governance. He emphasized that Sierra Leone’s foreign policy priorities are anchored on the principle of radical inclusion, a core philosophy of President Bio’s administration, which resonates with global calls for fairness, justice, and sustainable development.

“As a country that has overcome significant challenges, Sierra Leone understands the importance of building inclusive societies where every voice matters,” Chief Minister Sengeh stated. “Our leadership at both the regional and global levels reflects our determination to ensure that Africa’s perspectives are represented and respected in shaping the international agenda.”

The discussions also addressed Sierra Leone’s pivotal role as Chair of the Committee of Ten (C-10), which champions Africa’s representation on the United Nations Security Council, as well as its leadership as current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority. Both roles place Sierra Leone at the heart of critical global conversations on peacekeeping, regional stability, and sustainable development.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed commended Sierra Leone for its principled leadership and commitment to multilateralism, noting that the country continues to set an example for advancing inclusive development and peace.

This meeting reinforced Sierra Leone’s growing diplomatic footprint as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, ensuring that the nation’s voice, and by extension Africa’s, remains central in shaping decisions that affect global peace and prosperity.

Through engagements such as this, the Government of Sierra Leone is demonstrating that even small nations can exercise global leadership, contribute meaningfully to international discourse, and promote a vision of a more peaceful, equitable, and inclusive world.
