Civil Society Signs MoU with Parliament

Folowing an interview with Edmond Abu, Chairman of Paliamentary and civil society network in Parliament, he emphasized that the signing of a memorandum of understanding between civil society and Parliament holds symbolic significance. He described the relationship as an “unholy marriage” characterized by past bitterness and misunderstanding. According to Abu, this partnership aims to function as a conduit for civil society to engage with Parliament. He noted that this marks the first time in 24 years that both parties have come together, ending years of conflict.

Abu mentioned that some Parliamentarian   have previous experience working with civil societye, highlighting the type of relationship they aspire to foster. He also announced that his office will serve as a think tank, inclusive of diverse perspectives, to inform policy-making and legislation, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and good governance in Sierra Leone. Additionally, he confirmed that his chairmanship tenure will last for two years and emphasized that the partnership between Parliament and civil society is not about personal or political interests.

Abu reiterated that PARLCSONET will act as a bridge between Parliament and the citizens of Sierra Leone. He stressed that Parliament has passed Bills such as the Fnance Bill nd the Toll gate agreement, that directly impact Sierra Leoneans. By influencing Parliament, civil society can effectively voice the concerns of the public.

Furthermore, he clarified that the agreement is non-political, as civil society prioritizes the interests of ordinary Sierra Leoneans. He emphasized the importance of disagreeing on certain issues while still prioritizing the country’s well-being.

Abu concluded by mentioning that 52 civil society organizations have signed the agreement between Parliament and civil society. Additionally, a Steering Committe has been established to coordinate the Committee’s  meetings and identification cards will be issued out to all CSOs representatives.
