The Sella Development for Education and Progress (SeDEP), with generous support from Leone Rock Metal Group, has officially handed over a newly constructed and fully equipped blood bank to the management and authorities of the Wesleyan Hospital, marking a major milestone in community health development and public–private partnership in Sierra Leone.

The handover ceremony, held at the hospital premises, attracted a cross-section of stakeholders including executives of SeDEP, representatives of Leone Rock Metal Group, hospital management, medical staff, community leaders, and invited guests. The event was characterized by goodwill messages, expressions of gratitude, and a shared commitment to improving healthcare delivery, particularly in the area of emergency and lifesaving services.
A Timely Intervention for Lives at Risk
In presenting the facility, SeDEP executives emphasized that the blood bank project was conceived as a direct response to the persistent challenges faced by health institutions in accessing safe and adequate blood supplies. According to SeDEP, the lack of a functional blood storage and transfusion facility has, for many years, contributed to avoidable complications and loss of lives, especially among pregnant women, accident victims, surgical patients, and children suffering from severe anemia.

“This blood bank is not just a structure; it is a lifeline,” a SeDEP representative stated. “It represents our belief that development must be people-centered and that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right. With the support of Leone Rock Metal Group, we are proud to contribute meaningfully to saving lives and strengthening the health system.”
LRMG Reaffirms Corporate Social Responsibility
Speaking on behalf of Leone Rock Metal Group, a representative of the company reaffirmed its commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable community development. The company noted that its partnership with SeDEP aligns with its broader vision of supporting education, health, and social welfare in the communities where it operates.
“We believe that development goes beyond business,” the representative said. “Investing in health infrastructure such as this blood bank is an investment in human life, productivity, and national progress. Leone Rock Metal Group is pleased to support initiatives that deliver tangible and lasting benefits to the people.”
Major Boost to Health Service Delivery
The management and head of Wesleyan Hospital expressed profound appreciation to SeDEP and Leone Rock Metal Group for what they described as a transformative intervention. In their statements, hospital authorities noted that the new blood bank will significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies promptly and efficiently.
“This facility will drastically reduce delays in emergency care and surgical procedures,” the hospital head said. “It will improve maternal and child health outcomes and strengthen our ability to save lives. We assure our partners and the public that this blood bank will be professionally managed and maintained to the highest standards.”
Medical staff at the hospital also welcomed the development, describing it as a morale booster and a critical tool that will support their daily work and improve patient outcomes.
A Symbolic Partnership and Community Development
Beyond its immediate medical benefits, the blood bank stands as a symbol of effective collaboration between civil society organizations, the private sector, and healthcare institutions. Community leaders present at the ceremony praised the initiative and called on other organizations and companies to emulate the example set by SeDEP and Leone Rock Metal Group.
The ceremony was concluded with the formal handing over of documents, a tour of the blood bank facility, and renewed pledges from all parties to continue working together in advancing health, education, and sustainable development.
As Wesleyan Hospital begins full utilization of the blood bank, expectations are high that the facility will play a crucial role in reducing preventable deaths and improving the overall quality of healthcare services in the area. The intervention by SeDEP and Leone Rock Metal Group has once again demonstrated that strategic partnerships can deliver real progress and lasting impact for communities across Sierra Leone.
