EPA Concludes Consultations to Develop Salone’s 3rd Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

The Environment Protection Agency of Sierra Leone (EPA-SL) has successfully concluded a six-month nationwide consultation exercise aimed at developing the country’s third National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). This new strategy is a significant step in Sierra Leone’s efforts to protect its rich natural heritage and aligns with the global Kunming-Montreal Vision of Living in Harmony with Nature.

The NBSAP is designed to serve as a roadmap for reversing biodiversity loss, ensuring the fair and equitable use of genetic resources, and restoring ecosystems for the benefit of both people and the environment. It will also reinforce Sierra Leone’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Throughout the consultation process, the EPA engaged ministries, local councils, development partners, academic institutions, civil society, the media, and community stakeholders. Meetings were held in every district across the country, ensuring inclusivity and giving citizens a platform to shape national priorities. During these sessions, participants were briefed on global biodiversity goals and asked to identify realistic targets Sierra Leone can adopt and implement.

Sixteen proposed national biodiversity targets were presented for review. Discussions focused not only on how these goals could be achieved but also on the critical aspects of monitoring, financing, and enforcement. Community voices, expert insights, and institutional perspectives all contributed to a rich pool of recommendations that will inform the final version of the strategy.

The EPA emphasized that biodiversity is not only an environmental issue but also an economic and social one—essential for sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, health, and livelihoods. The forthcoming NBSAP will provide clear actions for government agencies, development partners, and local communities to take in safeguarding nature while promoting sustainable development.

By building on inclusive participation and intersectoral collaboration, Sierra Leone is positioning itself to play an active role in the global movement to halt biodiversity decline and protect natural resources for future generations.
