Parents May Stage a Peaceful Protest

Reports reaching Day Break say parents from across the country are urging the government to speedily fulfill the demands of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) otherwise they may take to the street because their children/wards have stayed home for long.

At a press conference organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on Tuesday 9 September,2025, at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Youyi Building, Freetown, the Minster of Basic and Secondary Education. Hon. Conrad Sackey informed journalists at a jam packed room that the Government of Sierra Leone has through the Ministry of Finance has already disbursed Le113, 187M.

‘’We have asked of the SLTU to be patient, said Conrad Sackey. In a defiant statement out to the public the Secretary General of the SLTU, maintained that schools will not be reopened until all government subsidies are paid in full to all schools.

Minister Sackey disclosed to the gathering that end of service benefits have been paid to all retired teachers across the country.

In a shocking revelation, Minister Sackey disclosed that some Community Banks utilize government transfers meant for teachers.  He said Apex Bank the supervisory bank for Community Banks will be contacted to look into such corrupt practice.

Meanwhile, Hon. Sackey maintained that his Ministry and the SLTU are still in negotiation but can’t assured when schools will be opened.

In his contribution, the Minister of Health, Dr.Austin Demby revealed that the Ministry has created portal where interested applicants can apply for various vacant positions, adding that his Ministry has recruited 5,000 new staff and they are preparing to employ additional 3,000.
