Reports reaching the Day Break Newspaper say former Minister of Social Welfare, Gender Childrens Affairs, Mustapha Bai Atilla, violently assaulted his wife, Monica Yenni Galiwa and left her in coma.
Monica, who is visually impaired, is a well-known broadcast journalist and advocate for youth and disability rights. Recently, she gained further recognition and popularity as the second runner-up in AYV Housemates Salone. She gave birth to twins less than two months ago.
Reports further state on social media alleging that Monica was temporarily confined to their home in the US under strict security surveillance. The allegations include claims of both physical and psychological abuse inflicted by Atilla.
The case has sparked widespread concern, with Monica’s friends and family members expressing deep fears for her safety and that of her new born babies.
The situation was brought to public attention by the Hawanatu Konneh Network, a move that catalyzed swift action from authorities.
Responding to the allegations, former Minister Atilla denied all allegations.
It was also reported that early in the morning, police officers conducted a successful operation, ensuring that Monica and her babies were safely removed from the residence.
This incident is one of several recent domestic violence cases that have shocked the nation. Just last week, Sia Fatu Kamara, an employee of the Freetown City Council, was allegedly beaten to death by her boyfriend, Abdul Kpaka.
