The Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), one of Sierra Leone’s most distinguished educational institutions, is set to celebrate a centenary of academic excellence, marking 100 years of unwavering commitment to quality education, girls’ empowerment, and national development.

Founded in 1926, FSSG has produced generations of accomplished women who have made significant contributions to education, healthcare, governance, business, and public service across Sierra Leone and beyond.

Speaking ahead of the centenary celebrations, the Principal of FSSG described the milestone as both a moment of pride and responsibility.

“Reaching 100 years is not just about celebrating longevity; it is about honoring a legacy of excellence, discipline, and service that has shaped strong women and responsible citizens for our nation,” the Principal said.

She noted that the centenary will serve as a platform to reflect on the school’s journey while renewing its mission for the future.

“This centenary allows us to reflect on the sacrifices of our founders, teachers, and past students, while recommitting ourselves to preparing the next generation of girls to lead with integrity, confidence, and academic excellence,” she added.

As part of the celebrations, FSSG plans a series of activities including thanksgiving services, academic symposia, cultural and historical exhibitions, alumni reunions, and community development initiatives, all aimed at showcasing the school’s rich heritage and continued relevance.

According to the Principal, the centenary is also a call for collective support from stakeholders.

“We invite our old girls, parents, partners, and friends of FSSG to join hands with us—not only to celebrate the past, but to invest in the future of this great institution and the young women who pass through its gates,” she emphasized.

Over the years, FSSG has remained a symbol of academic discipline and female empowerment, even during challenging periods in the nation’s history. Its strong alumni network continues to mentor students and support infrastructural and academic development.

As the school prepares to mark this historic milestone, the Principal expressed optimism about the road ahead.

“Our vision for the next 100 years is clear: to strengthen innovation, uphold our values, and continue producing young women who will lead Sierra Leone and the world with distinction,” she said.

The centenary celebrations are expected to draw together students, alumni, education stakeholders, and well-wishers from across the country and the diaspora, reaffirming FSSG’s place as a cornerstone of girls’ education in Sierra Leone.
