In celebration of International Labour Day 2025, Freetown Terminal Limited (FTL), a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), hosted a commemorative event under the theme: “Shaping the Future of Work – Innovation, Digital Transformation and Just Transition.”

Speaking on behalf of Mr. Maroun Abi Aad, General Manager of Freetown Terminal Limited, Human Resources Manager Ms. Yvonne Elliot expressed heartfelt appreciation to all employees. She stated, “ On this occasion, I want to appreciate each and every worker for their hard work and professionalism. Our workers are the driving force behind the success of this company. It is our daily effort—whether seen or unseen—that keeps our operations running and helps us move forward even through challenges. Labour Day is not just a day off. It is a day to recognize the contributions and celebrate the value of honest work. Thank you for all that you do. Stay committed to hard work and dedication as we continue to grow and succeed together. Happy Labour Day to all.”

Mr. Joseph During, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Labour, also addressed the gathering. He expressed his honor at being present,

‘’This day is set aside to celebrate diligent, efficient, result-oriented, and responsible workers. Sierra Leone is not an island. We are part of a global community that recognizes the value of Labour Day and has made it a public holiday. This shows government’s commitment to addressing the ever-evolving issues in the world of employment. That is why the Ministry has taken steps to review and develop progressive legislation such as the Employment Act, the Employment Regulations Act 2023, the Industrial Regulations and Tribunal Act 2024, the Social Protection Act of 2024, and the Work Permit Act of 2023. The Workers’ Compensation and Occupational Safety Bill is currently under review and will soon receive Presidential assent to become law. All these initiatives are progressive and address the current challenges in labour administration.”

He went on to congratulate the workers for their fortitude and their consistent reliance on social dialogue to resolve workplace issues. He maintained that social dialogue is indeed a powerful tool to resolve industrial disputes. He therefore encouraged everyone to continue to use it as a means of addressing concerns.

Mr. During also highlighted this year’s International Labour Day theme, chosen by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) of Africa: “Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice. This theme resonates strongly with the legal reforms the Ministry has undertaken to improve the labour landscape.

Mr. Valentine delivered a brief history of Labour Day, tracing its origins to the protests and sacrifices made by workers in the United States.

The celebration concluded with an interactive session where employees asked questions and raised concerns about issues affecting them. The session fostered open dialogue between management, employees, and government representatives
