Hon. Chericoco Glorified

By Ahmed Papa Kanu.

For the first time in its 77-year history, the Mabanta Ferry hosted a full chiefdom meeting on Saturday 28th June, 2025.

Descendants of Sanda Magbolontor and representatives from neighboring Kasseh Chiefdom gathered aboard the ferry to celebrate its restoration after two weeks of breakdown.

On 2nd June 2025, the ferry’s worn towing rope snapped under the weight of timber, coal, and vehicles instantly cutting off the only entry point to the chiefdom. Farmers watched their produce cassava and vegetables spoiled. Businesses halted and transportation came to a standstill.

A visit to the Sierra Leone Roads Authority by SMDA leaders and ferry manager, Mr. Obai, on 10th June confirmed that official repairs could take months due to disbursement protocols.

With losses mounting, King Komrabai Dumbuya turned to Hon. Chericoco. Responding swiftly, Hon. Chericoco donated ten million Leones for immediate repairs. The funds replaced the broken rope, overhauled the pulleys, and installed five solar-powered lights to allow safe night crossings.

On 29th June, the Regent Paramount Chief, the Chiefdom Speaker, SMDA Chairman, Hon. Alusine Bash Kamara, ward chairmen from Wards 227 and 228, 14 section chiefs, village headmen, councilors, youth leaders, and community organizations gathered aboard the ferry. Under the warm glow of new solar lamps, they praised Hon. Chericoco’s rapid intervention and King Komrabai’s leadership in rallying support.

“Today we reclaim our lifeline,” declared the Chiefdom Speaker. “Thanks to a leader who listens and acts faster than any organization.”

King Komrabai described Hon. Chericoco as a symbol of trust, development, and service to underrepresented communities, urging citizens to remember his actions when choosing the nation’s next president.

The Mabanta Ferry restoration stands as a vivid reminder that when leadership is proactive, private initiative can outpace government bureaucracy, reviving lifelines and renewing hope in isolated communities.
