The Office of the National Security (ONS), in Collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday 29th April, 2026 destroyed huge quantity of narcotic substances valued at $2.5 million during an operation held at the Sierra Leone Port and Harbour Authority. The burning took place at Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) headquarters in Hastings, Freetown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The confiscated drugs included large quantities of tramadol, cannabis, and other harmful substances commonly used in the production of \u2018Kush\u2019, a dangerous synthetic drug that has raised serious public health concerns in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delivering the keynote address, Andrew Jaya Kaikai emphasized the agency\u2019s ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that the destruction exercise demonstrates the government\u2019s firm stance against the illegal drug trade and its determination to safeguard communities, particularly young people, from the devastating effects of narcotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kaikai further called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and international partners to curb the spread of illicit drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and support national efforts aimed at eradicating drug abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the NDLEA will continue to intensify operations targeting drug networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his contribution, Head of TOCU, CSP M.J.K. Laggah, congratulate the security sector for such official destruction of narcotic drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that the exercise reflects the collective efforts in combating illicit drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CSP Laggah explained that the substances being destroyed were seized at SLPHA through intelligence Ied operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
strengthened interagency cooperation, and due diligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He expressed sincere appreciation to the judiciary for the directive of the destroyed of the drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Director of Organized Crime and Counter Terrorism Coordination, Sahr Moseray cited a recent successful operation involving the seizure of 450 cartons of drugs, which he said was made possible through timely intelligence shared among agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized that the fight against drugs is not about recognition or competition among agencies, but about safeguarding the future of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He reiterated that Tramadol has been officially banned in Sierra Leone since December, except for strictly controlled 50mg doses administered in medical facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He warned that any Tramadol found outside approved medical settings is illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Communication officer for SLPHA Mr. Aruna Kargbo commended the leadership of TOCU, ONS and SLP stating that the atmosphere and working environment had significantly improved, as evidenced by ongoing developments and infrastructural facelift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Kargbo praised the enhanced safety measures in the destruction of narcotics, noting that the process has become increasingly secure over the past months compared to previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also expressed appreciation to President Bio and the government for their continued efforts in addressing drug-related challenges, emphasizing that the fight against narcotics is a national responsibility that includes the active participation of citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that success in combating drugs ONS, NDLEA, SLP play a key role, adding that they cannot succeed in any way whatsoever without complete collaboration among all stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Kargbo highlighted that Tramadol has been officially banned in Sierra Leone since December, except for the regulated 50-milligram dosage, which is permitted strictly under medical supervision in hospitals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
