{"id":1974,"date":"2026-08-12T17:59:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T17:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/daybreaknewspapersl.com\/?p=1974"},"modified":"2026-08-12T17:59:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T17:59:29","slug":"reforms-strengthen-inclusion-peace-and-political-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daybreaknewspapersl.com\/?p=1974","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0\u2018\u2019Reforms Strengthen Inclusion, Peace and Political Stability\u2019\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>-Says Presidential Spokesman<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Marian Magdalene Bangura<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Strategic Communications Unit &#8211; MOICE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presidential Spokesman Alpha Khan has described Sierra Leone\u2019s recent constitutional and electoral reforms as a major milestone in the country\u2019s democratic journey, emphasizing their role in promoting peace, inclusion and political stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the Government\u2019s Weekly Press Conference held on Tuesday, 11th August 2026, at the Miatta Civic Centre in Freetown, Khan reflected on Sierra Leone\u2019s transition from one-party rule to multi-party democracy in 1991, describing it as a defining moment in the nation\u2019s political history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the country\u2019s experience of civil war and the subsequent Truth and Reconciliation process underscored the need to strengthen democratic institutions and prevent a recurrence of political violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan highlighted the extensive nationwide consultations undertaken during the constitutional review, involving public meetings, interviews, radio programmes and engagements with citizens across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have never had anything that extensive in consultation,\u201d he said, noting that the process was designed to ensure that proposed reforms reflected the aspirations of Sierra Leoneans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the reforms highlighted were changes to the electoral system, including proportional representation and adjustments to the threshold for winning presidential elections. Khan said the measures are intended to reduce electoral tensions, improve political representation and minimise the risk of violence, particularly during presidential run-offs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also stressed the importance of increasing women\u2019s participation in elected leadership, describing inclusive political representation as essential to building a peaceful and sustainable democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan said the Government accepted the key recommendations through a White Paper, followed by legislative action to give effect to the reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYesterday, we witnessed what we can call a watershed moment,\u201d he said, underscoring the significance of the reforms to Sierra Leone\u2019s democratic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urged citizens to recognize the lessons of the country\u2019s past, including the civil war and its consequences, while supporting democratic reforms that protect peace, national cohesion and the interests of future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>-Says Presidential Spokesman By Marian Magdalene Bangura Strategic Communications Unit &#8211; MOICE Presidential Spokesman Alpha Khan has described Sierra Leone\u2019s recent constitutional and electoral reforms as a major milestone in the country\u2019s democratic journey, emphasizing their role in promoting peace, inclusion and political stability.
