Koya Village, Port Loko District: A troubling story involving traditional customs, family succession and personal safety is drawing attention after reports emerged that Fatmata Kamara of Koya Village, Port Loko District, and her husband, Eugene Sawyer, have reportedly fled the area amid fears for their lives.

According to accounts surrounding the incident, Fatmata\u2019s mother, Mariatu Kamara, died on 5 December 2021. Mariatu was reportedly regarded as a senior figure or head within a traditional secret society, and according to the customs described by relatives and community sources, Fatmata was expected to succeed her mother and undergo the required initiation rites following the funeral.

What followed, however, allegedly turned into a frightening ordeal.

Reports indicate that after the funeral, Fatmata was taken to a designated bush location where the initiation ceremony was expected to take place. According to the account, she became frightened by what was taking place and managed to escape before the ceremony was completed.

The report further alleges that Fatmata remained in hiding in the bush for some time, attempting to avoid being discovered. It was reportedly only after nightfall that she managed to make contact with her husband, Eugene Sawyer, and inform him of what had happened.

The couple subsequently reportedly left the area, fearing that Fatmata could be taken back and compelled to complete the initiation.
