Parliament has approved Karefa A. F. Kargbo as the new Minister of Finance on Thursday, 20th August 2026. The bipartisan approval followed a confirmation hearing addressing inflation, domestic revenue mobilisation, and major economic agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his confirmation hearing, Karefa Kargbo responded to questions from MPs on inflation, port expansion agreements, domestic revenue mobilisation and measures required to strengthen the national economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He acknowledged the significance of his appointment, particularly as the country approaches an important political period, saying he was aware of the timing of his appointment and the legacy President Bio wants to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenting his profile to Parliament, the Leader of Government Business and Chairman of the Committee on Appointments and Public Service, Honourable Mathew S. Nyuma, described Karefa Kargbo as a distinguished Sierra Leonean professional with more than three decades of experience in regulatory affairs, finance and private-sector leadership in Sierra Leone, the United States and the wider sub-region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Honourable Nyuma, Karefa Kargbo is a Certified Public Accountant and international finance executive with extensive experience in public-sector finance and regulatory leadership. He previously served as a Cabinet Minister during the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) regime and retired from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces with the rank of Colonel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karefa A.F Kargbo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1993. He later obtained his Certified Public Accountant qualification in Maryland in 1999 and completed a programme in International Finance and Management at American University in 2002. He also underwent Advanced Infantry Officer Training at the Armed Forces Training Centre in Benguema in 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His professional career includes serving as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Sierra Leone Mines and Minerals Development and Mining Corporation from November 2022 to the present. He has also served as Chief Executive Officer of Clear Communications Company Limited since March 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other positions include Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vista Bank Sierra Leone Limited from November 2019 to August 2022, Financial Controller at the Petroleum Directorate in the Office of the President from August 2010 to January 2016, and Executive Vice President and Country Manager of Intercellular Sierra Leone Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They encouraged him to explore opportunities and pay close attention to the inflationary trend affecting the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the debate, Members from both the ruling and opposition benches commended President Bio for appointing Karefa A.F Kargbo, while also recognising the contribution of his predecessor, Fantamadi Bangura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MPs urged the new Minister to work closely with the National Revenue Authority (NRA), stressing that effective domestic revenue mobilisation would be critical to his success at the Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also encouraged him to personally engage the NRA and review its operations and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention was further drawn to the ongoing Kent Harbour project and its related agreements, which MPs said could contribute significantly to revenue generation and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MPs wished Karefa A.F Kargbo as he takes up his new responsibilities and urged him to remain committed to the people and the national interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approval session also ended on a celebratory note, as Karefa A.F Kargbo\u2019s humility and connection with the people were reflected in the lively atmosphere in the public gallery. His name was repeatedly echoed, while elements of Limba cultural expression were prominently displayed in celebration of his approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
