The chiefdom between the rivers (Njaluahun) in the Kailahun District has set a national record for conducting the most peaceful and one-ballot Paramount Chieftaincy election.

But the most outstanding of the peaceful conduct of the process was the dawning of a new era, the ushering in of the Gbow Dynasty back onto to the throne after nearly fifty years in the abyss.

The election was conducted on Wednesday 30th September at the Segbwema Court Barry with young, exuberant military officer, Colonel Donald Musa Gbow emerging winner in a landslide victory.

According to the official polling results issued by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Colonel Gbow secured 888 votes out of 1, 248 valid votes cast, which amounted to exactly 71.15% of the total vote share at the polling center.

His closest challenger, Jajua Lawrence S., finished with 24.92% of the votes (311 votes).

Gbow, is the first candidate who has scored 71% and above of the total votes cast in a chieftaincy election in the Kailahun District within the last 20 years.

Speaking to the media shortly after the process, the PC- elect thanked the stakeholders for conducting the election in a free, fair and transparent manner. He particularly extended his appreciation to the Councillors or Tribal Authorities (TAs) for considering him in their votes cast from among the other five candidates to give him authority to the staff as Paramount Chief of the chiefdom.

He said he is no stranger to his people as even before the process of conducting the election that has earned him the title, he has been in close contact with them and knows exactly the problems affecting them that need to be addressed.

He spoke on the need for inclusiveness in administering the chiefdom. “My first priority is to ensure unity prevails. I want to work with everybody for the development of this chiefdom,” he noted; adding that now that election is over, everybody should work for the advancement of Njaluahun Chiefdom.

In his quest for reconciliation and inclusiveness, he stated that leadership is not only about authority, but also about listening, serving, bringing people together, and working for the common good of the chiefdom.

The PC-elect particularly spoke on the need for accountability in revenue mobilisation considering that as a Class A chiefdom, Njaluahun has a lot of potentials for development if only revenue generated is managed well.

“I will ensure accountability in the chiefdom revenue mobilisation and distribution for the benefit of all,” he pledged.

He said he was appalled by what he saw in mining communities where there is no proper hygiene; with inadequate social facilities for indigenes. “Our mining communities deserve to benefit from the proceeds of the revenue collected and one way to do that is to improve on hygiene because there is poor toilet systems in those communities,” he lamented.

PC Gbow emphasised on ensuring transparency in revenue mobilisation and expenditure. “Revenue should not be benefiting the wrong people, the few as it used to be in the past. We will make sure the chiefdom generated revenue is accounted for and properly expended,” he vowed.

Of the six qualified candidates from the three ruling Houses, three were from the Jajua Ruling House, the family that has held on to the throne for the past forty years.

Commenting on the process in a snap interview with former MP for Constituency 7 comprising Njaluahun Chiefdom in Kailahun District, Hon Robin Faley, he said the result obtained by the winning candidate was a testimony to Musa’s popularity amongst his people.

He said he was the preferred candidate for the people, including himself. “He was my preferred candidate and I’m happy that he set a monumental record.”

Hon Faley said since Colonel Gbow was the people’s choice, he did not hesitate to throw his weight behind him. “During the process, I engaged in preaching peace and for the TAs to choose who can be helpful to the people,” he posited: saying he was confident that the young chief will work with stakeholders, and that with his experience in public service, especially the military he will bring development in the chiefdom.

As a devout Catholic, the PC-elect on Sunday October 4 formed part of the congregation at the Saint Peter’s Parish in Segebwema where he hobnobbed with the community people in a show of unity and inclusiveness.
