Turkish Foundation Provides Thousands with Clean Water

The Foundation of Türkiye Graduates in Sierra Leone, with generous support from the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, has announced the commissioning of solar-powered boreholes in various underserved communities across Sierra Leone, marking a significant step towards improving access to clean and safe drinking water for thousands of people.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment to humanitarian service, community development, and improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations, particularly in communities where access to safe drinking water remains a major challenge.

Through this intervention, families who have long faced difficulties accessing reliable water supplies are benefiting from improved access to this essential resource. The projects are expected to contribute to better public health, improved sanitation, and enhanced living standards in beneficiary communities.

Modern Technology for Sustainable Water Supply

Each borehole has been designed with modern, solar-powered technology to provide a reliable and sustainable water supply while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.

According to the project details, each installation is equipped with a solar-powered water pumping system, a 10,000-litre water storage tank, and 12 water collection taps to enable community members to access water conveniently.

The boreholes are drilled to an average depth of between 85 and 100 metres, depending on local conditions, to access groundwater resources. With an estimated technical lifespan of more than 15 years, each installation is designed to serve communities over an extended period, subject to proper maintenance and effective management.

Each borehole is expected to benefit approximately 5,000 to 7,000 people, potentially easing the daily burden on families who must otherwise travel long distances or spend considerable time searching for safe drinking water.

30 Solar Boreholes Installed

The Foundation of Türkiye Graduates in Sierra Leone reports that more than 30 boreholes are currently operational across the country, providing thousands of families with improved access to clean water.

""

The growing network of water facilities represents an important contribution to community welfare, particularly in underserved areas where water infrastructure may be limited.

Beyond providing drinking water, the facilities can support improved household hygiene, sanitation, and other daily activities that depend on a dependable water supply.

Access to safe water is also essential for protecting children and other vulnerable groups from water-related illnesses. By bringing water collection points closer to communities, the initiative has the potential to reduce the time and effort families spend obtaining water, allowing them to devote more time to education, livelihoods, and other productive activities.

The use of solar energy further demonstrates the project’s emphasis on sustainable solutions that can operate without relying entirely on the national electricity grid.

Türkiye’s Continued Support for Sierra Leone

The initiative also highlights the importance of international cooperation and humanitarian partnerships in addressing basic development needs.

The Foundation of Türkiye Graduates in Sierra Leone has expressed profound appreciation to the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation and the people of Türkiye for their generosity, solidarity, and continued support for vulnerable and underserved communities in Sierra Leone.

Their contribution demonstrates how partnerships between organisations and international charitable institutions can help address essential community needs and improve the well-being of ordinary citizens.

The commissioning of these boreholes is more than the installation of water facilities; it represents an investment in public health, dignity, and the future of communities that depend on reliable access to clean water.

Sustainability and Community Responsibility

As the number of operational boreholes increases, continued maintenance and responsible community management will be important to ensuring that the facilities remain functional throughout their intended lifespan.

Regular inspection of solar pumping systems, proper care of storage tanks, and effective management of the collection taps will help protect the investment and ensure that communities continue to benefit from the projects for years to come.

Community participation and coordination with relevant local authorities can also help identify maintenance needs early and promote fair access to the water facilities.

With more than 30 boreholes already serving communities nationwide, the initiative provides a foundation for further efforts to expand access to safe water and support sustainable development across Sierra Leone.

The Foundation of Türkiye Graduates in Sierra Leone and the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation deserve recognition for their contribution to this important humanitarian cause, as access to clean and safe drinking water remains fundamental to healthier families, stronger communities, and national development.

Clean water saves lives, strengthens communities, and creates hope for a better future.
