Freetown 17 June 2026.<\/strong> The Legal Aid Board (LAB) has conducted a one-day UNICEF-funded stakeholders\u2019 engagement with a cross section of Western Area Stakeholders drawn from various facets of society on issues bordering on access to justice for teenage girls and adolescent mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engagement took place on Tuesday 16 June 2026 at the Board’s head office at 27 Wilberforce Street in Freetown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gathering is dedicated to capacitating the Stakeholders who included western area tribal heads; religious leaders; trade unionists and representatives of the Kekeh and Bike riders on critical issues bordering on child protection; child-friendly dispute resolution mechanisms; community support for adolescent mothers and their children; access to legal aid; referral pathways for cases involving abuse and violence on teenage girls and adolescent mothers and the role of traditional and religious leaders in safeguarding children as well as promoting community accountability among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her opening statements, the Executive Director of the Board, Ms Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles, started by thanking UNICEF for its continued support to the work of the Board, especially on issues bordering on children\u2019s rights and access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Carlton-Hanciles briefly explained the purpose of the gathering which she said among others was to educate the stakeholders on the rights of teenage girls and adolescent mothers, adding that a pregnant girl or adolescent mother should not be ostracized nor being thrown out of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged the Stakeholders to take issues of teenage girls and adolescent mothers with the utmost seriousness they deserve, stating that such issues must be talked about in their barrays, churches and mosques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged them to always remain neutral in their strides to resolve conflicts and disputes, stating that anything other than that will always lead to problems.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on the gathering to stand up for the rights of children and adolescent mothers as they too are the future of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She admonished the Stakeholders to continue to preach law and order in their respective communities as elections are fast approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She advised each and every one of them to be ambassadors of peace and to take the message to their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She assured the gathering of the Board’s continued commitment in ensuring that it leaves no one behind on access to justice issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a short statement, the representative from UNICEF to the gathering, Madam Edna Hawa Vincent; said gone are the days when you only talk to adults and not the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She revealed that about 30% of teenage girls in the country get into marriage life before they are eighteen, adding that 25% of country\u2019s maternal mortality is from adolescent girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on the public to do responsible parenting, stating that people should show love to their children and not to harm them. She urged them to always refer child related matters to the relevant authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  On their part, the stakeholders assured the Board and UNICEF of their commitment to the course, noting that children are the backbone of any country\u2019s development. They called on the Board to continue to collaborate with them and to also conduct trainings for them on some basic laws having to do with inheritance, domestic violence, child rights, sexual offences, early child marriage, etc.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statements were also made by the Head of the Board’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism, Alhaji Alghassim Sesay; the Board’s Human Resource Manager, Counsel Ibrahim Bangura, et al.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
