Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, popularly known as Cee Bah in the weekly press conference held on 13th May, 2025, at the Ministry’s Conference Room at Youyi Building, Brookfields, Freetown, confirmed to journalists that there was a strike action at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).
He said one of thorny issues was the welfare of the staff. Minister Bah disclosed that the Bio led government has agreed to improve their welfare by a pay rise of 50%.
He maintained that the staff complained of pay equity as some of them were under paid, adding that it is a long standing issue and a legitimate demand.
The Information Minister further said some of the aggrieved staff are demanding for the investigation report carried out by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). He however, maintained that the ACC’s report is confidential and should not be for public consumption.
He made it categorically clear that the Board has the legitimate power to hire and fire staff when the need arises.
Minister Bah also refuted allegations that the Ministry of Information and Civic Education has held on to equipment meant for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), adding that the cameras being used at the weekly press conference were acquired privately.
He concluded that the Ministry of Information and Civic Education is prohibited by law in interfering in the state broadcaster’s affairs.
