Leone Rock, SeDEP and Kamakwie Marathon Donate Blood Bank

A significant milestone was reached on December 24, 2024, as Leone Rock Metals, in collaboration with the Sella Development for Education and Progress (SeDEP) and the Kamakwie Marathon, officially donated a fully equipped blood bank to the Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital.

This initiative was spearheaded by Mr. Brima Sorie Turay, the Chairman of the Kamakwie Marathon, aims to enhance healthcare delivery and save lives in the Kamakwie region.

During the launching event, Mr. Turay revealed that the idea for the project originated from Mr. Beddous Bangura, a proactive member of the Marathon Committee. Together with other committee members and SeDEP stakeholders, they worked diligently to bring the project to fruition. He acknowledged Leone Rock Metals for their generous funding, which played a pivotal role in making the blood bank a reality.

The current president of SeDEP, Mr. Joseph Turay, who officially launched the blood bank, was commended for his tireless commitment to the initiative. In his remarks, Mr. Turay emphasized the importance of the project, urging hospital staff to use the facility efficiently and for its intended purpose. “This blood bank is not just a structure; it is a lifeline for the people of Kamakwie and its surrounding communities. Let us ensure it serves its purpose and saves lives,” he stated.

The vice president of SeDEP, Mr. Said Ishmail Saidu Kargbo, made a brief background on the project, highlighting its primary goal of reducing preventable deaths due to a lack of blood availability.

Dr. James Bangura, representing the hospital, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation. “As a medical practitioner, there is no greater frustration than losing a patient due to the unavailability of blood. This blood bank will be a game-changer for us,” he said, adding his hopes for the sustainability and expansion of the initiative.

Brima Leonard Bangura, the hospital administrator, echoed similar sentiments, describing the donation as a lifeline for the facility. He commended SeDEP and the Kamakwie Marathon for their dedication and prayed for continued support for the hospital.

Kenneth Dumbuya, Senior Public Health Superintendent and Malaria Focal Person, expressed his joy at the gesture, assuring all stakeholders of the hospital’s commitment to maintaining the blood bank. He further applauded the collaborative effort that led to its establishment.

Madam Neneh Bah, head of gender at SeDEP, was recognized for her instrumental role in ensuring the project’s success. Her relentless efforts were a testament to the importance of gender-inclusive development initiatives.

Mr. Ansumana Bangura, one of the project’s pioneers, also received accolades for his hard work and dedication in bringing this transformative project to life.

The Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital now boasts a blood bank that promises to enhance the facility’s ability to handle emergencies and improve patient care. The event concluded with a collective pledge from all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and effective use of the blood bank for the benefit of the Kamakwie community.
