Freetown City Hall was filled with excitement and celebration on January 7th 2026, as staff of the Freetown City Council (FCC) surprised Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr with a warm and colorful birthday celebration at her office.
The event brought together council staff, well-wishers, and supporters who gathered to honor the mayor for her dedication, leadership, and remarkable contributions to the transformation of Freetown, popularly known as the “Tree Town” initiative. The atmosphere was joyful, reflecting the strong bond between the mayor and her team.
During the celebration, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed heartfelt gratitude to the FCC staff for the surprise and for their continued support throughout her tenure. She praised their commitment and teamwork, noting that the progress achieved in the city was a collective effort.
In a moment that surprised many attendees, the mayor made a major political announcement. She officially declared her intention to contest as a presidential aspirant in the 2028 general elections, signaling a new chapter in her public service journey.
The mayor also revealed that she would be stepping down from her role as Mayor of Freetown in approximately three months, after which the Deputy Mayor would assume leadership of the council.
She emphasized that the transition would be smooth and guided by continuity, unity, and service to the people of Freetown.
