Mayor Aki Sawyerr Excels at UNGA Summit

The Mayor of the Freetown City Council, Yvonne Aki -Sawyerr, has made residents of Freetown proud by showcasing outstanding leadership qualities at the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA),in New York, Climate summit hosted on the 29th September 2024.
In her capacity as Mayor of Freetown and C40 Cities and Co – Chair, she participated in eight panel discussions, and four bilateral meetings with key stakeholders, she passionately advocated for the increase involvement of Cities’ youths and women in addressing Climate Change.
She stressed on the need for additional climate finance for Cities bearing the worst consequences of climate crisis.

According to Mayor Aki – Sawyerr, her hectic time in UNGA Summit of the future and New York Climate week was a great opportunity to build on existing and establish new partnerships to support the delivery of the Freetown Climate Action Plan and the Transform Freetown Agenda respectively.
During one of her engagements, she recalled the natural disasters that Freetown has witnessed, noting that it prompted the Freetown City Council to design both the Freetown Climate Action Plan and the Transform Freetown Agenda.
Mayor Yvonne Aki – Sawyerr said that the UNGA Summit of the future and Climate week as an opportunity for innovation and to address Climate Change in all 40 Cities across the world.
