The General Manager of the National Tourist Board (NTB) Fatmata Mida Carew has emphasized that tourism is not just the responsibility of the Ministry of Tourism or the NTB but a national business that requires the involvement of every Sierra Leonean.

Speaking at a Ministry of Information and Civic Education press conference held at the Miatta Conference Hall, on the 25 July 2025, the NTB representative highlighted the critical role citizens must play in protecting and promoting Sierra Leone’s tourism assets, particularly the beaches.

“Yes, we need investments and food to support tourism, but more importantly, we need the people of this country to help address the issues affecting our tourism sector,” Madam Carew said. “Tourism is a business, and it belongs to all of us.”

Referencing improvements made along the coastline, the official noted the beauty and appeal of Sierra Leone’s beaches but lamented persistent sanitation challenges. “We are seeing waste, even human feces, along the beach. That’s a major problem. No matter how much we clean, if people continue to dump indiscriminately, we will not make progress,” he stated.

He disclosed that over 40 waste collection trips are conducted weekly from the beaches, yet the problem persists due to limited resources and public neglect. “We are doing our part, but it’s not enough. Everyone must take ownership. We need a mindset shift,” he urged.

The NTB rep also raised concerns about the upcoming U-20 events and the impression of unsanitary conditions could leave on international visitors. “We cannot expect visitors to appreciate our country if what they encounter are dirty, mismanaged public spaces.”

He called for stronger local leadership and community accountability in managing waste and safeguarding tourist sites. “It’s time Western Area residents take full responsibility for the management of our beaches and tourism spaces.”

The press conference was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and galvanize support for sustainable tourism and civic responsibility.
