Over Clerk of Parliament Saga…

Hon. Abdul Kargbo Faces Serious Backlash

A storm of disappointment is sweeping across Sierra Leone following the recent actions of Honorable Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, regarding the controversial issue surrounding the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Paran Tarawally.

The controversy began when credible reports surfaced indicating that Hon. Paran Tarawally intended to contest for the position of Secretary General in the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). As the news broke out, Hon. Abdul Kargbo was quick to react publicly, talking to the media and other platforms to express his disapproval. He insisted that, according to the laws and spirit of the Sierra Leone Constitution, the Clerk of Parliament must immediately resign from his position if he intends to engage in active partisan politics or contest for a high-ranking political office.

While some observers initially viewed Hon. Kargbo’s intervention as a call for constitutional adherence and institutional integrity, the move has since backfired, triggering outrage and accusations of hypocrisy, double standards, and political manipulation.

Critics argue that Hon. Abdul Kargbo’s stance appeared less about upholding the law and more about scoring political points against the ruling party. Many Sierra Leoneans have taken to social media and radio talk shows, voicing their deep frustration over what they describe as selective outrage and divisive politics.

“Where was this energy when other civil or public servants crossed similar lines?” one citizen questioned during a popular morning radio program. “It seems certain political actors only remember the constitution when it benefits their agenda.”

Others have criticized Hon. Kargbo for engaging in what they describe as a distraction from more pressing national issues, such as the high cost of living, youth unemployment, and growing economic uncertainty.

Several political analysts have also noted that the matter could have been handled more diplomatically behind closed doors rather than in the media, thereby preserving the dignity of Parliament and reducing political tension. Instead, the public drama has further polarized an already divided political landscape.

The fallout from Hon. Abdul Kargbo’s actions underscores the urgent need for political maturity, consistency in leadership, and a commitment to nation-building above party interests. As Sierra Leoneans continue to grapple with a host of developmental challenges, many are calling for leaders who will rise above petty politics and act in the best interest of the country.

In the eyes of many citizens, this episode has exposed the kind of political brinkmanship that continues to erode public trust in governance. Hon. Abdul Kargbo may have intended to spark a constitutional debate, but the result has been widespread disappointment and growing calls for accountability—on all sides of the political spectrum.
