Over Shalima’s Monopoly on TVS Kekeh and TVS Bike Imports…

Big Protest Awaits Shalimar

A wave of public frustration is brewing across the county as concerns mount over the alleged monopoly granted to Shalima Trading Company for the importation and distribution of TVS Kekehs (tricycles) and TVS motorbikes. The company’s growing dominance in the market has sparked outrage among traders, commercial riders, and ordinary citizens who view the situation as unfair and detrimental to competition and economic freedom.

According to reports, several local importers and business people have been sidelined, leaving Shalima Trading as the primary entity authorized to bring in Kekehs and motorbikes. This development, critics argue, has led to inflated prices, limited supply options, and reduced opportunities for smaller businesses that have long operated in the transport sector to thrive.

Commercial bike riders’ unions and Kekeh associations across the country are now voicing strong discontent, claiming that the monopoly is crippling their livelihoods and limiting access to affordable vehicles. Some have even hinted at the possibility of nationwide protests if the government fails to intervene and create a level playing field.

Economic analysts warn that monopolies of this nature could undermine Sierra Leone’s private sector growth and discourage new entrepreneurs. They urge the government to review the contract terms and ensure transparency and fairness in granting import rights.

As tensions rise, citizens are calling on the Ministry of Trade and Industry to provide clarity on how Shalima Trading came to hold such power over an entire market sector — and to take immediate steps to prevent what many fear could escalate into widespread public protest..
