There is an adage which says: ‘’Bad habits hardly dies’’ In one of our local languages Krio which says: ‘’Monkey nor dae lef en black hand’’ .At a recent press briefing in the Conference Room of Parliament, Majority Leader of the SLPP, Mathew Nyuma, and Information and Civic Education Minister, Chernor Bah, stoutly debate over the return of the former suspended Clerk of Parliament, Paran Tarawally.
Hon. Nyuma clarified that Tarawally’s suspension followed serious allegations of corruption and a thorough investigation was mounted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which led to administrative actions against him.
Without mincing words, he pointed out that Paran’s suspension, going without salary, reflects the severity of the situation. Hon. Nyuma added that his wife faces a five-year ban while the embezzled funds were fully recovered by the state.
Minister Bah raised concerns that whether further punitive measures were needed beyond the suspension and financial penalties Pran suffered.
Mr Bah callously defended the government’s administrative actions against Paran, arguing that the current actions were fair and proportional to the offenses. He questioned the public retribution for more stiffer punishment so as to deter him from corrupt acts.
It could be recalled that Paran Tarawally was investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for slotting in his wife as a staff of Parliament without going through the due processes of recruitment. To add salt to injury, Paran’s wife was not reporting for duty but was collecting colossal monthly salary.
