The Parliament of Sierra Leone has passed the Counter-Terrorism Act 2024 into law after its third reading in the House. The bill, which seeks to enhance the country’s counter-terrorism framework, received unanimous approval from Members of Parliament.
The Counter-Terrorism Act 2024 establishes the National Counter-Terrorism Coordination Committee, which will be responsible for overseeing anti-terrorism operations, coordinating intelligence efforts, and ensuring the country’s security apparatus is equipped to combat threats.
Key provisions of the new law include the criminalization of terrorism-related offenses, the enforcement of strict measures against terrorist financing, and the freezing of assets linked to terrorist activities. The Act also prohibits financial support to terrorism and outlines stringent penalties for individuals or organizations found guilty of engaging in or facilitating such acts.
During the final reading, the Speaker of Parliament called for a vote, and the Bill was passed with overwhelming support. Members of Parliament emphasized the importance of the legislation in protecting national security and aligning Sierra Leone with international counter-terrorism efforts.
The passage of the Counter-Terrorism Act 2024 marks a turning point in strengthening the country’s legal framework against terrorism, ensuring law enforcement agencies have the necessary tools to prevent and combat extremist activities.
