The Kamakwie Police Division has on Thursday, 23rd January 2026, destroyed over 10 kilograms of marijuana (popularly known as Jamba) in Kamakwie Town, Karene District, in a bold move aimed at strengthening the fight against drug abuse and criminal activities.
The public destruction exercise was carried out as part of efforts by the Sierra Leone Police to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and commitment to law enforcement, especially amid growing public concerns and rumors that some police officers are involved in the sale of illegal drugs or tolerate such criminal activities.
The exercise was led by the Acting Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Kamakwie Police Division, alongside his team of officers. According to the division, the drugs destroyed were seized during several raids conducted in different localities across Karene District since the beginning of the division’s intensified campaign against drugs.
This landmark action is said to be the first of its kind in the history of Karene District, signaling a renewed determination by the police to rid the district of harmful substances and criminal networks.
The event was witnessed by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Office of National Security (ONS), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Legal Aid Board, and other community leaders. Their presence was to ensure transparency and to build public confidence in the police operations.
Speaking to the press, Sergeant Gerbilla, from the Kamakwie Police Division’s Information Office, stated:
“Not all the suspects involved in this illegal activity were arrested during the raids. However, those who were apprehended have been charged to court and are currently in detention. The court has ordered the division to destroy all the drugs that were seized since the beginning of this operation.”
He further emphasized that the destruction of the drugs was carried out in compliance with legal procedures and court directives, adding that the police will continue to intensify operations against drug trafficking and abuse in the district.
Community stakeholders praised the initiative, describing it as a strong message to criminals and a confidence booster for residents, especially youths who are the most affected by drug abuse.
The Kamakwie Police Division assured the public that the fight against drugs will remain a top priority, and called on residents to continue providing useful information to help identify and arrest those involved in illegal drug activities.
This action marks a significant step in restoring public trust and promoting a safer, healthier Karene District.
