On Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, Alhaji Momodu Koroma, the incoming Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, officially took leave of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House. Ambassador Koroma, accompanied by his family, was joined by the High Commissioner to Nigeria and the Ambassador to Senegal in this ceremonial event before assuming their new diplomatic roles.
President Bio congratulated the diplomats and expressed confidence in their ability to meet the country’s expectations. He highlighted the importance of their efforts in further strengthening Sierra Leone’s strategic relationships with their respective countries, emphasizing mutual benefits through cooperation and diplomacy.
Ambassador Koroma brings significant experience to his new position. A seasoned politician, he has held key roles in the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and served under the late President Tejan Kabba’s administration. Beyond his political career, he is an academic with a background as a university professor, physicist, and environmentalist, with a strong focus on renewable energy and sustainability.
Koroma’s diplomatic and ministerial experience includes serving as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the country’s international relations. He also served as Minister of Presidential Affairs and Minister of Energy and Environment, where he was instrumental in policy development related to sustainable development and energy management.
One of the major highlights of Koroma’s career was his involvement in establishing the Peacebuilding Fund for Sierra Leone in partnership with the United Nations, a critical initiative for the country’s post-conflict recovery and reconciliation.
In 2007, Koroma ran as the vice-presidential candidate for the SLPP alongside the late Solomon Berewa, further cementing his influence within national politics.
As Sierra Leone’s second Ambassador to Morocco, following H.E. Atumanni Dainkeh, Koroma is expected to contribute significantly to advancing economic diplomacy between the two nations. His tenure comes at a time when Sierra Leone and Morocco have recently signed new trade agreements, further enhancing bilateral relations.
The Sierra Leone Embassy in Rabat was established on August 27th, 2021, and Ambassador Koroma’s extensive diplomatic experience promises to deepen the ties between Sierra Leone and Morocco.
