Stakeholders Meet on the Formation of SLCB

Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh today convened a high-level stakeholder meeting on the establishment of the Sierra Leone Commodity Board, following a recent Cabinet decision the meeting focused on two key outcomes: the formal establishment of a national Commodity Board and Government’s decision to become the sole exporter of selected commodities, beginning with cocoa. The discussions aimed at identifying practical steps to ensure effective implementation of these decisions.

Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister emphasized that the engagement was intended to translate Cabinet decisions into action, noting that the collective responsibility of participating institutions is to actualize implementation. He added that the overarching goal is to align implementation strategies with national priorities.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security highlighted the critical role of stakeholder engagement, stressing that transitioning to a government-led export model requires extensive coordination, technical preparation, and collaboration across the value chain. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Trade and other partners to ensure a smooth transition.

The Produce Monitoring Board (PMB) outlined key operational tools required to enhance quality assurance, including moisture meters, cocoa cutters, and cashew cutters, while the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) identified the need for reliable power supply to support its regulatory functions.

Institutions present at the meeting included the Produce Monitoring Board (PMB), Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB), Produce Marketing Company (PMC), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civic Education, and the Bank of Sierra Leone.

The establishment of the Commodity Board is expected to strengthen commodity regulation, improve export quality, increase value addition, and ensure fair returns for farmers—directly supporting Pillar One of the Big Five Game Changers, “Feed Salone,” by boosting agricultural productivity, food security, and inclusive economic growth.
