Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL), in its drive to deliver a credible and successful 2026 Population and Housing Census, on 18th November 2025 officially commenced an intensive ten-day training programme for field personnel ahead of the forthcoming Pilot Census.
The training was simultaneously launched across Bombali, Kailahun, Bonthe, and the Western Area Urban Districts, representing a significant milestone in Stats SL’s nationwide preparations.

The Pilot Census, scheduled for December 2025, will take place in Kissi Teng Chiefdom (Kailahun), Dema Chiefdom (Bonthe), Mara Chiefdom (Bombali), and Magazine and mountain Cut (Freetown)—the same areas where the Pilot Cartographic Mapping Exercise was recently completed.
As a critical preparatory phase, the Pilot Census aims to rigorously test all major components of the census process. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of the census questionnaire and digital data-collection tools; reviewing logistical and workflow arrangements; and confirming the robustness of supervisory structures and deployment strategies. The exercise will also assess digital transmission systems, strengthen field protocols, and measure the effectiveness of community engagement and communication approaches.

Beyond these core assessments, the Pilot Census will help identify operational gaps, refine field methodologies, and ensure that all systems function seamlessly ahead of the nationwide census rollout in December 2026.
The ten-day training is expected to produce a highly skilled and well-prepared corps of field personnel. Enumerators will gain the competencies required for accurate and reliable data collection; supervisors will be equipped to lead teams and maintain data-quality standards; technical staff will be trained to troubleshoot digital devices and platforms; and field officers will be prepared to apply standardized procedures across all operational areas.

In addition, the training is designed to build field-team confidence, strengthen coordination, and deepen understanding of roles and responsibilities—contributing to a smooth and efficient Pilot Census, and ultimately, a successful national census.
Stats SL reaffirms its commitment to delivering a national census that is credible, transparent, and reflective of Sierra Leone’s true population. The launch of this comprehensive training programme underscores the institution’s dedication to upholding international best practices and ensuring professionalism and integrity at every stage of the 2026 Population and Housing Census.
