TEC Appoints New Acting Chairman

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), at an emergency meeting convened by the Minister of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) on Thursday, 16th October 2025, appointed Dr. Lawrence Babawo as the new Acting Chairman of the Commission.

Dr. Babawo was elected unopposed by the Commissioners present.

This decision follows a petition submitted to the Minister by staff members of the Commission, raising allegations against the substantive Chairman, Professor A. M. Alghali, relating to double-dipping, abuse of office, and other concerns.

The Minister, who chaired the meeting held at the MTHE Conference Room, welcomed the Commissioners and explained that the emergency session was convened in response to the serious allegations outlined in the staff petition. Given the gravity of the issues raised, the Minister informed the meeting that Professor Alghali had been asked to proceed on indefinite leave pending a thorough investigation into the matter.

In accordance with the provisions of the Tertiary Education Commission Act of 2025, the Commissioners unanimously agreed on the appointment of Dr. Babawo as Acting Chairman to ensure the continued smooth operations of the Commission during this period.
