TEC Chairman Entangled in Alleged Abuse of Office

The Chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has come under intense public scrutiny following mounting allegations of abuse of office. Reports suggest that he may have exploited his position for personal gain, raising serious questions about transparency, accountability, and integrity within one of Sierra Leone’s most critical education oversight institutions.

According to concerned stakeholders in the education sector, the Chairman is alleged to have unilaterally imposed himself as Vote Controller, a role traditionally reserved for the Executive Secretary, while also intimidating staff members of the Commission. It is also alleged that he usually submits questionable allowances for reimbursement, overlapping benefits, and conflicts of interest have further fuelled suspicions of alleged corruption and misconduct at the very heart of the Commission.

Unconfirmed sources disclosed to this press that the alleged actions have prompted the entire staff of the TEC to formally petition the relevant authorities. In their petition, staff reportedly expressed a vote of no confidence in the Chairman, declaring that they can no longer work with him, and called for a full-scale investigation into the matter.

This controversy emerges at a critical time for Sierra Leone’s higher education sector, which is already grappling with severe underfunding, weak infrastructure, and persistent concerns over quality assurance and accreditation. Education advocates fear that the scandal could erode public confidence in the TEC, an institution meant to safeguard credibility and enforce standards across the nation’s tertiary education system.

Civil society groups, students, and education professionals have joined the call for a swift and independent probe to establish the truth behind the allegations. They argue that, if proven, the misconduct should not go unpunished and that holding the Chairman accountable would signal the government’s seriousness in combating corruption and strengthening good governance.

Political commentators have also weighed in, warning that scandals of this nature undermine trust in public institutions and risk derailing national progress. They caution that without decisive action, the abuse of office allegations could set a troubling precedent for others in positions of authority.

For now, the TEC Chairman remains in office, but pressure is intensifying in the institution. Should the Ministry of Higher Education wait for an open confrontation from the aggrieved staff. The public now awaits a clear and firm response from the authorities, one that will determine whether this unfolding alleged scandals end in vindication or the Tec Chairman resigns.
