As the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) prepares for its elections, attention turns to the leadership of Thomas Daddy Brima, whose presidency has brought significant changes to football in the country.
His tenure has been marked by notable achievements in women’s football, youth development, and infrastructure. However, like any leader, he has faced challenges, and the upcoming elections offer an opportunity to assess both his successes and areas that need further attention.
One of Brima’s standout accomplishments has been the advancement of women’s football. By establishing the Female Premier League Board and launching the Female National Premier League, he has created a platform for female athletes to compete and showcase their talents. Teams like Mogbwemo Queens have represented Sierra Leone in the CAF Women’s Champions League preliminaries—an important step toward inclusivity in the sport.
However, critics argue that sustaining women’s football requires stronger structures and increased support to ensure long-term success.
Brima has also overseen significant improvements in football infrastructures. He has renovated stadiums and upgraded training facilities, have provided players with better environments to train and compete, raising the standard of football in Sierra Leone and enhancing the country’s regional reputation. However, some stakeholders emphasize the need for wider access to these facilities, particularly in rural areas, to ensure equal opportunities for all players.
Youth development has been another key focus of Brima’s presidency. He has initiated the Coaching B Certificate program which have enhanced the skills of local coaches, ultimately benefiting young athletes.
Additionally, his emphasis on holistic development—integrating education and character-building alongside football training has laid the groundwork for a new generation of player.
