The National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Batilo Songa, has been widely commended for his growing calls for national unity, peaceful political engagement, and constructive cooperation between the country’s two dominant political parties—the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the All People’s Congress (APC).
At a time when political tensions and partisan disagreements often dominate the national conversation, Songa’s message has been welcomed by many political observers, civil society groups, youth leaders, and citizens who believe that Sierra Leone’s democratic future depends on dialogue, mutual respect, and the ability of political leaders to place national interests above party rivalry.

Political analysts have described the Chairman’s position as timely, arguing that Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions become stronger when ruling and opposition parties engage constructively on matters of national importance. They maintain that reducing political hostility would help restore public confidence, encourage investment, strengthen governance, and promote social harmony.
Supporters of the unity initiative believe that reconciliation between members of the APC and SLPP would contribute significantly to national stability. They argue that although political competition remains an essential part of democracy, it should never undermine national peace or divide communities that have coexisted for generations.
Across the country, many citizens have expressed hope that leaders from both political parties will continue to embrace dialogue and discourage inflammatory rhetoric capable of fueling unnecessary political tension. Community leaders have also called on supporters of both parties to respect one another’s political choices and reject violence, intimidation, and hate speech.
Observers further note that Sierra Leone has made significant progress in consolidating democratic governance over the years, and maintaining peaceful relations between political parties remains essential for protecting those gains. They say that responsible leadership from party executives can inspire supporters to prioritize peaceful coexistence and national development.
Songa reiterated that political leadership carries a responsibility to unite rather than divide the people. He encouraged politicians at every level to demonstrate maturity, respect democratic institutions, and engage in constructive discussions whenever disagreements arise.
Many stakeholders have welcomed his remarks as a positive contribution to strengthening political tolerance in Sierra Leone. They believe that sustained dialogue between the SLPP and APC can help reduce mistrust, build confidence among citizens, and create an atmosphere conducive to development, investment, and democratic consolidation.
