More than 4,270 students, professionals, researchers, and members of the public accessed the Africell American Corner between January and June 2026, highlighting the growing impact of Africell Sierra Leone’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative in expanding access to free educational resources and learning opportunities across the country.
Located in Freetown, the Africell American Corner has become one of Sierra Leone’s leading free learning hubs, offering users access to a well-equipped library, computer laboratory, high-speed internet, conference facilities, and reliable electricity. The center is open to everyone, including students, journalists, lawyers, doctors, social workers, researchers, and entrepreneurs seeking a conducive environment for learning and professional development.
Coordinator of the Africell American Corner, Francis Kabia, said the facility remains committed to removing barriers to education by providing quality services at no cost. According to him, the center recorded 4,275 patrons during the first six months of 2026 alone, demonstrating the increasing demand for accessible educational spaces.
Kabia explained that accessing the facility is simple, requiring only basic registration, adherence to the center’s regulations, and observance of its dress code. He noted that the initiative continues to attract people from diverse backgrounds who rely on the center for research, studying, internet access, training, and professional work.
One of the center’s long-time users, Ishmeal Amadu Jalloh, Executive Director of Waste Free Salone, said the Africell American Corner played an important role during his university years and continues to support his professional career.
“There is nowhere else in Sierra Leone where you can find such a well-organized, conducive learning environment completely free of charge,” Jalloh said. “The reception from the staff, especially the coordinator, is exceptional. I thank Africell Sierra Leone for investing in education and encourage other institutions to emulate this initiative.”
Students also praised the facility for easing many of the challenges they face in pursuing higher education.
Second-year College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) student Moses K. James described the center’s library as one of the best study spaces in the country.
“The library has greatly improved my studies. The computer laboratory helps us complete assignments and develop digital skills. This facility has positively impacted not only my education but also that of many other students,” he said, thanking Africell Sierra Leone for providing the services free of charge.
Final-year medical student Salamatu Abu Bakarr Kamara said the centre has been invaluable throughout her academic journey, particularly during periods of electricity shortages.
“As medical students, we depend heavily on research and uninterrupted study time. The Africell American Corner gives us reliable electricity, free internet, computers, and a safe environment to study from morning until evening. It has truly been a lifeline for many of us,” she said, encouraging more students to make use of the facility.
As demand for reliable educational resources continues to grow, the Africell American Corner is helping bridge the gap by providing thousands of Sierra Leoneans with free access to knowledge, technology, and professional development opportunities. Through this flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Africell Sierra Leone continues to invest in education, empower young people, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
