Dr. Ibrahim Bangura (DIB), the leading flagbearer aspirant of the All Peoples Congress (APC), has once again demonstrated why many Sierra Leoneans believe he is the right leader to guide the country toward a brighter future. On Saturday, 27th June, Dr. Bangura took his Heal, Unite, and Build message to the people through an environmental awareness walk, reinforcing his commitment to addressing one of the nation’s most pressing challenges.
Among the three pillars of his vision, the word Heal stands out as a powerful call for national renewal. It is not only about healing divisions among citizens but also about restoring the environment, which has suffered years of neglect, degradation, and uncontrolled human activities. Protecting the environment is essential if Sierra Leone is to secure a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
The environmental awareness walk began at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a symbolic location that has increasingly faced threats from encroachment and deforestation. Choosing this venue highlighted the urgent need to protect Sierra Leone’s forests and wildlife while reminding citizens of their shared responsibility to safeguard the country’s natural heritage.
Today, Sierra Leone is increasingly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Rising temperatures have made walking under the scorching sun uncomfortable, while sleeping at night has become difficult because of the excessive heat. Every rainy season brings devastating floods, landslides, and building collapses that claim lives, destroy homes, and leave many families displaced. These challenges are clear reminders that environmental protection can no longer be ignored.
Speaking during the awareness walk, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility by stating:
“When you look at the question of human security, one of the components has to do with the environment. The security of the environment, how you interact with and deal with the environment, is fundamental to how the environment will react to you.”
His message reflects a simple but powerful truth. The way people treat the environment ultimately determines how nature responds. When forests are destroyed, waterways blocked, and ecosystems damaged, the consequences are often severe and disastrous.
By placing environmental conservation at the centre of his public engagement, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura has demonstrated that protecting Mama Salone is not merely a political slogan but a shared national responsibility. His environmental awareness campaign serves as a reminder that healing Sierra Leone begins with healing its environment, ensuring a safer, healthier, and more resilient nation for all.
