-Says Unbearable Hardship, Blackouts and Rising Poverty
Three years after President Julius Maada Bio secured re-election, the Femi Claudio Cole-led Unity Party has launched a sharp criticism of the government’s performance, alleging that Sierra Leoneans continue to face worsening economic hardship, persistent electricity outages, and increasing poverty across the country.
According to the opposition party, many families are struggling with the rising cost of living, while businesses continue to suffer from frequent power cuts that have affected productivity and economic growth. The party further claims that the number of people resorting to begging has increased as unemployment and financial pressures continue to weigh heavily on ordinary citizens.
Speaking on behalf of the party, its leadership argued that Sierra Leoneans had expected significant improvements following the President’s re-election but instead have been confronted with mounting socio-economic challenges. The Unity Party called on the government to implement stronger measures to address inflation, improve electricity supply, create employment opportunities for young people, and strengthen social welfare programmes.
The party maintained that restoring public confidence will require practical solutions rather than political rhetoric, urging the government to place greater emphasis on improving the daily lives of citizens.
The government has previously stated that it remains committed to addressing economic challenges, expanding energy infrastructure, and implementing reforms aimed at improving living conditions despite global economic pressures.
As political debate intensifies, many Sierra Leoneans continue to look for tangible improvements in their livelihoods, with the cost of living, reliable electricity, and job creation remaining among the country’s most pressing concerns.
