SLPP MP Blasts Minister Ramatulai Wurie
The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Member of Parliament who doubles as Chairman of Tertiary Education, Hon Joseph Williams Lamin has described the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie as “very disrespectful”
According to Hon. Lamin, he has made frantic efforts to summon the Minister to Parliament in order to have an amicable settlement on the Milton Margai Technical University fracas, but she always refuse to attend the Committee’s meeting.
“All what the so-called minister is doing is contempt of Parliament. Several times, the minister had refused to attend Committee summons. Disregard to parliamentary laws is tantamount to contempt of parliament, “Hon Lamin said.
He said a meeting was held on 19th June at the Administrative Building in Parliament with relevant University authorities, including members of the University Court, to amicably resolve the issue, adding that because of the absence of the Minister at the meeting, another meeting was scheduled for 6th July 2026, but the Minister never showed up.
The Chairman viewed such violation of Parliamentary orders as serious and promised to channel such complaints to the Speaker of Parliament for action.
The Chairman expressed specific concern over the Ministry’s handling of governance and administrative disputes at state-run universities.
The Committee investigated the unilateral suspension of the university’s Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Philip John Kanu. On June 19, 2026, the Committee ruled that the suspension was illegal, as 20 out of 21 University Court members did not support it, and mandated that he resumes his duties immediately.
Following an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) report, the Committee’s Oversight role was invoked to address deep-rooted management concerns. Civil rights groups and stakeholders have called on the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, to ensure due process and institutional autonomy are protected amid these governance disputes.
However, the Chairman had reported the defiant attitude of the Minister to honour Parliamentary quest to resolve the University saga.
