Freetown — A woman (Aminata Sankoh) in the Waterloo community is reported to have fled her home following an alleged domestic violence incident involving her husband and a dispute concerning lesbian relationship.
According to accounts from residents, the incident occurred on the 6th of June 2025 at the couple’s residence after the husband allegedly discovered his wife with another woman in their matrimonial bedroom having lesbian sex.
The discovery reportedly led to a confrontation during which the husband allegedly assaulted his wife. Her cries for help attracted the attention of neighbours, who subsequently gathered at the residence.
Some community members also alleged that the woman’s involvement in the alleged relationship was linked to her persistent refusal to undergo initiation as a Soway, a Traditional Secret Society title associated with female leadership within the Bondo society. However, this claim could not be independently verified.
Her husband explained to the neighbours that his wife and other woman were having sex on their matrimonial bed and the other woman reportedly left the scene immediately.
The neighbours turned against her and started shouting You have committed a taboo in our community; it is against our culture and religion. The chief, elders and the imams must hear this.
Following the confrontation, the woman reportedly left their matrimonial home.
Residents said tensions subsequently increased within the community, with some people expressing anger over the allegations concerning the woman’s private life. The situation reportedly became serious enough for her to fear for her safety and remain away from the community.
The incident has also raised concerns about domestic violence, community hostility and disputes involving lesbian intimate relationships.
