Hon. Aminata Pushes for Women’s Participation In Governance

The 30 per cent quota for women’s representation is gradually translating into increased female participation in leadership, with women now occupying various positions of trust and responsibility across the country.

Against this backdrop, the leadership of the Unity Party on Saturday, 24th October 2026, celebrated its ninth anniversary and held its national convention under the theme: ” Women Rise , This Is Our Time”.

The event brought together prominent women from across Sierra Leone, including Hon. Aminata Sesay and First Lady Fatima Bio, among other distinguished personalities.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Aminata Sesay strongly encouraged women to step forward, embrace leadership opportunities, and take up positions of responsibility in society. Drawing from her experience as a woman in Sierra Leone, Hon. Aminata Sesay acknowledged that pursuing leadership positions often comes with numerous challenges. However, she stressed that these challenges should not discourage women from pursuing their aspirations and making meaningful contributions to national development.

As the country prepares for the next general elections, Hon. Aminata Sesay expressed her desire to see more women stand up for their rights and actively participate in the political process. She emphasised that greater female representation in governance could help address societal challenges and improve the living conditions of vulnerable communities.

She further noted that unity among women remains essential to achieving their collective goals. According to her, when women come together in solidarity, they can overcome barriers and make significant strides in leadership, particularly with the support of their male counterparts.

Hon. Aminata Sesay also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Unity Party, particularly its leader, Femi Claudius Cole, whom she commended for establishing and leading a political party as a woman.

She reaffirmed her commitment, as a Member of Parliament, to supporting fellow women who aspire to leadership positions, stressing the importance of encouraging and empowering more women to take up leadership roles across the country.
