BHC Hosts Team Sierra Leone

The Deputy British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Madam Kathleen Reid and her team hosted a send-off reception for Team Sierra Leone ahead of the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Addressing athletes and officials at the High Commissioner’s Residence, Runnymede, Main Hill Station Road, Freetown, the Deputy High Commissioner congratulated the athletes and urged them to put Sierra Leone first during the Games. She said the send-off is to motivate the athletes and officials and to show Britain’s unwavering love to Sierra Leone. 

Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Mohamed Alphaka Conteh, Esq., expressed appreciation to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone for providing the required support for Team Sierra Leone’s participation. “As an Authority, we are committed to making sports the right pathway for young Sierra Leoneans,” he said.

The NSA Boss used the occasion to encourage the athletes to make the country proud by winning medals and laurels during the Games.

Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, appreciated the Commission for hosting Team Sierra Leone ahead of the Commonwealth Games. “This send-off occasion truly demonstrates Britain’s continued friendship and support for Sierra Leone,” the Minister said.

She applauded the leadership of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone for being proactive ahead of the Games. She commended the NOC and the various associations for their transparent and merit-based selection of athletes for the Games.

Madam Minister called on the athletes to remain dedicated and diligent during the Games. She warned the athletes to maintain discipline before, during and after the Games.

The send-off ended with a panel discussion in which athletes shared their different stories and motivations.
