MDAs Economists, Budget Officers and Accountants Capacitated
The Public Debt Management Division, supported by the Enhancing Efficiency in Public Debt Management Institutional Support Project (EEPDMISP), completed a three-day engagement with Economists, Budget Officers and Accountants from selected Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the management of public debt and its implications for fiscal policy design and analysis.

The workshop that was held from Wednesday, 1st to Friday, 3rd July 2026 at Family Kingdom Conference Hall in Aberdeen, Freetown, targeted staff from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Defence to enhance their knowledge of identifying implications or risks behind poor public debt management and the risks associated with borrowing.
The Workshop covered understanding public debt, key stakeholders in debt management, debt dynamics in Sierra Leone, types of public debt, government borrowing, debt transparency and accountability, legal framework, debt impact on the economy and society, and economic implications of debt, among others.
During the closing courtesies of the training, Deputy Director, Public Debt Management Division, Charles Conteh, thanked the African Development Bank (ADB) through the government of Sierra Leone for providing this grant that would help to improve the public debt management in Sierra Leone, as it enhances the knowledge of government officials on economic and debt management practices and policies.
He admonished participants to use the knowledge gained in managing public debt as key players in the government’s public debt Management and expenditure process in their daily work.
Mr. Conteh stated that they are planning to conduct similar trainings for staff of Local Councils to equip them with the necessary tools for public debt management, as they also play a key role in managing government projects.
